Beberapa pengamat asal Lampung Barat, yang sudah pasti mendukung teori Skala Brak sebagai asal usul bangsa Lampung sering menyertakan buku The History of Sumatra sebagai salah satu rujukannya. Tepatnya kalimatnya sebagai berikut :
"If you
ask the Lampoon people of these parts from whence they originally came they answer,
from the hills, and point out an inland place near the great lake from whence
they say their forefathers emigrated..."
Saya rasa kalimat tersebut tidak perlu saya terjemahkan, since you are an internet browser!
OK, setelah membaca kalimat tersebut memang tampak seolah masyarakat Lampung yang dimaksud mengatakan bahwa ia berasal dari tempat yang tinggi dengan danau yang besar. Namun benarkah buku tersebut mengatakan hal seperti itu?
Maka perkenankan saya untuk meluruskan apa yang dimaksud dalam buku karya William Marsden tersebut.
Untuk itu kita lihat kalimat yang lebih lengkap :
"It is
probably within but a very few centuries that the south-west coast of this
country has been the habitation of any considerable number of people; and it
has been still less visited by strangers, owing to the unsheltered nature of
the sea thereabouts, and want of soundings in general, which renders the
navigation wild and dangerous for country vessels; and to the rivers being
small and rapid, with shallow bars and almost ever a high surf. If you ask the
Lampoon people of these parts from whence they originally came they answer, from the
hills, and point out an inland place near the great lake from whence they say
their forefathers emigrated: and further than this it is impossible to trace".
Pembahasan :
the south-west coast of this
country : Pantai/Pesisir Barat Daya dari negeri Lampung tentu Lampung Barat
less visited by strangers : kurang/jarang didatangi orang asing pendatang
unsheltered nature of
the sea thereabouts : tentu yang dimaksud Samudera Hindia
ever a high surf : sungai yang dimaksud Way Besai
the
Lampoon people of these parts : orang-orang Lampung yang ditanya pada bagian Barat (sesuai deskripsi diatas)
it is impossible to trace : mustahil untuk dilacak kebenarannya
Dari penjabaran diatas, dapat kita ketahui bahwa sesungguhnya buku tersebut tidak menyatakan bahwa asal usul bangsa Lampung dari Skala Brak. Namun itu hanya pengakuan dari masyarakat yang ada di wilayah pantai Barat / Barat daya dari negeri Lampung.
Mengenai bukti-bukti lain yang menyangkut Skala Brak, saya tidak berkompeten menjawabnya. Saya hanya meluruskan agar buku The History of Sumatra tidak dijadikan dasar klaim bahwa Skala Brak adalah asal usul bangsa Lampung. Sebab kalimat dalam buku tersebut sedang membahas masyarakat Lampung Barat, bukan Lampung seluruhnya.
